# The blurting method, with a timer and an instant gap check

Read your notes, hide them, write everything you remember, then see exactly which key terms you missed. Then blurt again. Free, in your browser, for GCSE, A-level, IB or anything you're revising.

## 1. Your notes

Topic (optional)

Paste or type the notes you're revising (one small topic works best)

Read for23510minutes

## 2. Blurt it out

Notes are hidden. Write everything you can remember: facts, keywords, dates, steps, quotes. Messy is fine. Keep going for at least a minute after you think you're done.

## How blurting works

Blurting (also called a "memory dump") is a form of **active recall**: instead of re-reading, you pull information out of memory, which shows you the gap between what you recognise and what you can actually reproduce. The method is simple:

1. **Pick one small topic**: a page of notes, not a whole chapter.
2. **Read it** carefully for two to five minutes.
3. **Hide it** and write everything you remember on a blank page.
4. **Check** against your notes and mark what you missed, in a different colour if you're on paper.
5. **Blurt again**, then come back to the same topic in a day or two.

This page does steps 2 to 5 for you. It pulls the key terms out of your notes (repeated words, names, numbers and capitalised terms), checks which of them appear in your blurt, and highlights the lines in your notes that hold what you missed. It's a word match, not a marker: it can't tell whether you explained something correctly, so treat the score as a gap-finder, not a grade.

### Tips that make it work

- Small chunks beat big ones. If you score under 40%, split the topic.
- Blurt the missed terms first in round two, and try to say how they connect.
- Space it: the calendar button adds re-blurts 1, 3 and 7 days later.
- Blurting suits fact-heavy subjects (biology, chemistry, history, geography, RS, English Literature quotes). For maths, blurt the method steps, then do questions.
- Use it alongside past papers, not instead of them.

## Questions

### What is the blurting method?

Blurting is an active recall revision technique: read a small topic, hide your notes, write down everything you can remember, then check your notes to find what you missed and repeat.

### Does blurting actually work?

Blurting is a form of retrieval practice, which learning research consistently finds more effective than re-reading. It works best on small chunks, repeated over several days, alongside past-paper questions.

### How does the gap check work?

It picks out key terms from your notes (repeated words, names, numbers and capitalised terms) and checks which ones appear in your blurt. It matches words, not understanding, so use it to find gaps rather than as a mark.

### Is my work saved or uploaded?

Your notes and blurt stay in your browser and are not sent to us. Only a short history of topics and scores is saved on this device, and you can clear it.
