# Is ChatGPT study mode good for homework?

Yes, for students who want to learn: it's free, asks guiding questions, gives hints and quizzes you instead of handing over the answer. The catch is that it's a toggle, so a student can switch it off mid-chat and get the plain answer, and OpenAI says it can behave inconsistently because it runs on custom instructions. It works best with clear house rules, or with a parent turning it on by default through ChatGPT's parental controls.

## Where it falls short

- **One click from the answer.** OpenAI describes it as easy to "toggle study mode on and off during a conversation".
- **Inconsistency.** OpenAI says the custom-instruction approach may cause "some inconsistent behavior and mistakes across conversations".
- **Built for older students.** OpenAI says it was "built with college students in mind", and ChatGPT is 13+ ([terms](https://openai.com/policies/row-terms-of-use/)).
- **Wrong answers happen.** Like any AI, including ours, it can be confidently wrong. Check important steps.

## How to use it well for homework

1. **Try first.** Ten honest minutes on the problem before opening ChatGPT.
2. **Start in study mode** and say what you've tried: *"I got x = 4 but I'm not sure. Don't tell me the answer; where did I go wrong?"*
