Ask Poppy vs ChatGPT study mode
Two ways to get help without being handed the answer. Here's what each actually does, what it costs, who it's for, and where ChatGPT study mode is the better choice. (Disclosure: we make Ask Poppy. Facts about ChatGPT study mode come from OpenAI's own pages, as checked 18 Oct 2026, and are linked so you can verify them.)
Ask Poppy, the AI tutor that asks instead of tells. Free, 30 messages a day · iPhone, iPad, Mac
At a glance
| ChatGPT study mode | Ask Poppy | |
|---|---|---|
| Made by | OpenAI | Poppy Labs AS (Oslo), a small, new team |
| What it is | A mode inside ChatGPT ("Study and learn") that works through problems step by step instead of giving quick answers (OpenAI) | An AI tutor and mentor app you talk to (hold to talk, it speaks back) or type to |
| Answers by default? | ChatGPT does by default. Study mode guides with questions and hints; you can toggle it on and off mid-chat (OpenAI) | No. It asks what you know and gives hints instead of handing over answers. That is the whole design, not a mode |
| Subjects | Anything; you can also upload your own notes and files | Any topic you bring. It can look up curriculum goals for supported subjects and countries, but has no course library of exercises or videos |
| Voice | ChatGPT has voice chat (limited on Free) (pricing). Unknown whether study mode behaves the same in voice | Yes, voice in and out |
| Parents | Unknown (not covered on the pages we checked) | Up to three child profiles; parents can see their children's conversations |
| Platforms | Web, iOS and Android (pricing) | iPhone, iPad and Mac (Apple silicon). No Android or web app |
| Free option | Yes. Study mode is on Free, Go, Plus and Pro (pricing) | Yes, 30 messages a day |
| Paid (US) | App Store: Go $8.00, Plus $19.99 per month (App Store). Go "may include ads" (pricing) | $9.99/month or $99.99/year |
| Age | 13+; under 18 needs a parent or guardian's permission (terms) | Rated 4+ on the App Store |

"Unknown" means we couldn't confirm it on an official page. Prices are US prices and can differ by country and platform.
Where ChatGPT study mode is better
- Free and very capable. Study mode is included on the free plan, with OpenAI's models behind it.
- Your own materials. Upload notes, slides or a reading and study from them.
- Everywhere. Web, iPhone, iPad and Android, so it works on a school Chromebook or Windows laptop.
- One app for everything else too. If you already use ChatGPT, there is nothing new to install.
Where Ask Poppy is different
- Guiding is the whole app, not a toggle. In ChatGPT the plain answer is one switch away, and OpenAI says study mode can show "inconsistent behavior and mistakes across conversations" because it runs on custom instructions.
- Built for talking it through. Ask Poppy is designed around voice conversation with hints, rather than a general assistant with a study setting.
- Nothing else to drift into (image generation, coding, agents). It only does learning conversations.
- Made for younger learners and adults alike; OpenAI says study mode was "built with college students in mind".
Does it give you the answer?
OpenAI describes study mode as combining "Socratic questioning, hints, and self-reflection prompts" instead of providing answers outright, and says you can toggle it on and off during a conversation (OpenAI). OpenAI also says it is powered by custom system instructions and may behave inconsistently. Ask Poppy asks questions and gives hints by default, with no switch to turn that off. We have not run a controlled test comparing how firmly each one holds back.
Who should pick which
Pick ChatGPT study mode if
you are 13+ (with permission if under 18), already use ChatGPT, want to study from your own uploaded notes, or need it on Android, Windows or a Chromebook. It is free.
Pick Ask Poppy if
you want a tutor where holding back the answer is the design rather than a setting, prefer talking out loud, and use an iPhone, iPad or Mac.
Either way
ask it to quiz you, and explain the idea back afterwards. Our Explain it back tool works with both.
Try it yourself: a 15-minute side-by-side test
Don't take our word for it (or theirs). Pick one problem you're genuinely stuck on and run it through both:
- Type or say: "I'm stuck on this. Help me, but I want to learn it." Don't ask for the answer.
- Notice: did it ask what you already know, or start explaining?
- After two hints, say "just tell me the answer". Does it hold its ground kindly, or give in?
- Close the app and explain the idea back in your own words. Our free Explain it back check helps.
- Tomorrow, try a similar problem from memory. The tool that left you able to do that is the one that worked for you.
We don't claim either tool improves grades or is safer; we haven't measured that. Spot something out of date? Email [email protected] and we'll fix it and update the date.
Want to try the Ask Poppy side of this test? Ask Poppy is an AI tutor you talk or type to. It asks questions and gives one hint at a time instead of handing you the answer, and it remembers where you left off so you can pick it up again tomorrow.
Free, 30 messages a day on iPhone, iPad and Mac. Optional subscription. (Disclosure: this site is made by the Ask Poppy team.)
