AI tutors that don't just give you the answer
Most AI will happily do your homework. A few are built to make you do it. Here's how to tell the difference, and an honest look at the options. (Disclosure: we make Ask Poppy, one of them.)
Ask Poppy, the AI tutor that asks instead of tells. Free, 30 messages a day · iPhone, iPad, Mac
The five-question test
Ask any AI tutor to help with a problem you're stuck on and watch what it does:
- Does it ask what you already know before explaining?
- Does it give one hint at a time and wait for you?
- Does it ask you to explain it back in your own words?
- If you say "just tell me", does it hold its ground (kindly) or give in straight away?
- Can you pick up tomorrow where you left off?

Options in 2026
| Tool | How it guides | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Khanmigo (Khan Academy) | Guides rather than gives finished answers; tied to Khan Academy content. | Parent/learner plan is paid and US-focused; check current price and availability on khanmigo.ai. |
| ChatGPT study mode | A mode (launched July 2025) that walks you through problems step by step. | It's a mode inside a general chatbot, so the full answer is one switch away. OpenAI |
| Gemini Guided Learning | A Gemini mode (launched August 2025) with step-by-step guidance and quizzes. | Also a mode inside a general assistant. TechCrunch |
| Ask Poppy (ours) | Built only around asking: finds out what you know, gives one hint at a time, asks you to explain back. Voice or text. | Free with 30 messages a day on iPhone, iPad and Mac; optional subscription. Remembers context so you can continue tomorrow; you can view and delete memories. Like any AI, it can make mistakes. |
For prices, age rules and platforms in one table, see the comparison page and our best-of list with criteria.
We haven't run an independent study comparing these tools, and we don't claim learning outcomes. Try two of them on the same problem using the test above and see which one leaves you able to explain it the next day.
Want a tutor that works this way by default? Ask Poppy is an AI tutor you talk or type to. It asks questions and gives one hint at a time instead of handing you the answer, and it remembers where you left off so you can pick it up again tomorrow.

Questions
Is there an AI tutor that doesn't give answers?
Yes. Several tools are designed to guide rather than answer: Khanmigo from Khan Academy, the study mode in ChatGPT, Guided Learning in Gemini, and Ask Poppy. The difference is mostly whether the guiding is a mode you can switch off or the whole design.
Why would I want a tutor that holds back the answer?
Because seeing an answer feels like understanding, but you usually can't reproduce it a day later. Retrieving, explaining and fixing your own mistakes is what makes learning stick.
What is a Socratic AI tutor?
One that teaches mainly by asking questions: what do you already know, what would happen if, why do you think that. It gives hints rather than solutions and asks you to explain your reasoning back.
