🌱 Learn out loud by Ask Poppy

Is the AI's answer right? A 2-minute check

Don't trust it, test it. In two minutes: estimate what a sensible answer looks like, plug the answer back into the question, try a second method or a second source, look for a counterexample, and explain it back without the screen. For equations in x, the checker below plugs the value in for you.

Plug it back in (equations in x)

Any question: your checklist and a check-it prompt

Why bother checking?

AI answers sound confident whether they're right or wrong. JCQ, which sets the rules for GCSE and A-level coursework, warns that AI tools "often produce answers which may seem convincing but contain incorrect or biased information" and can produce fake references (JCQ: AI use in assessments). In our sample of 791 critical App Store reviews of homework apps, wrong answers were the most common complaint. Checking also does something else: it makes you do the thinking, which is where the learning is.

The five checks

  1. Estimate: round the numbers. Is the answer the right size and sign?
  2. Plug it back in: does the answer satisfy the original question?
  3. Second method or second source: a diagram, working backwards, or one claim checked in a textbook.
  4. Counterexample: is there an obvious case where it breaks?
  5. Explain it back: say each step out loud with a "because". Use explain it back for a fuller self-check.

Want a tutor that asks you to check your own working? Ask Poppy is an AI tutor you talk or type to. It asks questions and gives one hint at a time instead of handing you the answer, and it remembers where you left off so you can pick it up again tomorrow.

Questions

How can I tell if an AI's answer is right?

Check it yourself: estimate what a sensible answer looks like, plug the answer back into the question, try a second method or a second source, and explain each step out loud. A step you can't explain is a step you haven't checked.

Do AI homework apps get answers wrong?

Yes, sometimes. In our sample of 791 recent critical App Store reviews of homework apps, wrong answers were the most common complaint (31%). Any AI, including ours, can make mistakes, so checking matters whichever app you use.

Can I ask the same AI to check its own answer?

You can, but it may just agree with itself. Ask a different AI, and ask it to help you check rather than to give a verdict straight away. This page writes that prompt for you.

Is the plug-it-back-in checker reliable?

It evaluates simple equations in x (numbers, + − × ÷, powers and brackets) at the value you type and shows both sides. It can't check word problems, graphs or proofs, and it rounds very small differences to equal.
