Hint ladder: hints, not the answer
Stuck on a question but actually trying to learn it? Climb a five-rung hint ladder: a nudge, the concept, the first step, a similar example, then a check. Take one rung, try again, and only take the next one if you need it. You get the why, not just the answer, and your working stays your own.

The five rungs
- Nudge: what is the question asking for?
- Concept: which idea, rule or formula connects what you know to what you want?
- First step: do just one line of working and check it.
- Similar example: solve an easier, different problem first, then repeat the steps.
- Check: plug your answer back in, estimate, check units.
Show your working on paper as you go. If you need all five rungs, that's fine: do a similar question tomorrow from memory to make it stick.
Use it with any AI
ChatGPT study mode and Gemini Guided Learning already lean this way, but they're modes you can switch off. The prompt this tool writes asks for one rung per message and tells the AI not to confirm your answer, but to ask how you'd check it. Got an answer from an AI already? Check it in two minutes.
Want hints one rung at a time, out loud? Ask Poppy is an AI tutor you talk or type to. It asks questions and gives one hint at a time instead of handing you the answer, and it remembers where you left off so you can pick it up again tomorrow.

Questions
How do I get ChatGPT to give hints instead of answers?
Tell it what you've tried, ask it not to give the answer or the full working, and ask for one hint at a time that you request yourself. This page writes that prompt for you as a five-rung ladder: nudge, concept, first step, similar example, check.
What is a hint ladder?
A sequence of hints that starts small and only gets more specific when you ask: first a nudge about what the question wants, then the idea that applies, then the first step, then a worked example of a different but similar problem, and finally a way to check your own answer.
Does this tool solve the problem?
No. It doesn't read or solve your question. The five rungs are general study moves for the subject you pick, and the prompt asks an AI to follow the same rules. What you type stays in your browser.
Why not just look at the worked solution?
Reading a solution feels like understanding, but you usually can't reproduce it a day later. Doing the steps yourself with a small hint is slower and sticks better. Use the worked solution last, to check.
