🌱 Learn out loud by Ask Poppy

Is ChatGPT study mode good for homework?

Yes, for students who want to learn: it's free, asks guiding questions, gives hints and quizzes you instead of handing over the answer. The catch is that it's a toggle, so a student can switch it off mid-chat and get the plain answer, and OpenAI says it can behave inconsistently because it runs on custom instructions. It works best with clear house rules, or with a parent turning it on by default through ChatGPT's parental controls.

How to use it well for homework

  1. Try first. Ten honest minutes on the problem before opening ChatGPT.
  2. Start in study mode and say what you've tried: "I got x = 4 but I'm not sure. Don't tell me the answer; where did I go wrong?"
  3. Keep it on. Agree as a family that switching it off for assessed work is a no. Our house rules generator turns that into a one-page agreement.
  4. Explain it back without the screen, then try a similar problem tomorrow. The Explain it back check helps.
  5. Check your prompts. Paste one into our prompt checker to see who would be doing the thinking.

Parents: OpenAI says linked teen accounts can have study mode switched on by default from parental controls (OpenAI: parental controls).

Questions

Can my teen turn off ChatGPT study mode?

Yes, by default it can be toggled on and off during a conversation. OpenAI says that when a parent turns study mode on from parental controls for a linked teen account, it is on by default for each new chat; the page we checked doesn't say whether the teen can then switch it off.

Is ChatGPT study mode free?

Yes. OpenAI lists study mode on the Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans.

Is using ChatGPT study mode for homework cheating?

Using it to understand and practise is usually fine. Handing in anything it wrote as your own is not, and if a teacher says no AI, that applies to study mode too. See our parent's guide to AI and cheating.

How old do you need to be to use ChatGPT?

At least 13, or the minimum age in your country. Under-18s need a parent or legal guardian's permission.
