ChatGPT study mode vs Gemini Guided Learning: which is better for studying?

For most students they're close: both are free, both guide with questions and hints instead of handing over answers, and both can be switched off for a direct answer. ChatGPT study mode is the better pick if you want quizzes and to study from your own notes, or if you're a parent who wants it on by default for a linked teen account. Gemini Guided Learning is better if you learn from diagrams and YouTube videos, or if a child under 13 uses Google Family Link outside Europe.

Where each one is stronger

ChatGPT study mode: quizzes and open-ended knowledge checks, personalisation from past chats, and a parent setting that makes it the default for a linked teen. OpenAI notes it runs on custom instructions and may show "inconsistent behavior and mistakes across conversations" (OpenAI).
Gemini Guided Learning: visual explanations (images, diagrams, YouTube videos, which need Gemini Apps Activity on) and flashcards or study guides built from your own class materials or quiz results.
Ask Poppy: if you'd rather talk it through out loud than read, and want a tutor where hints are the only mode. It's iPhone, iPad and Mac only, has no course library, and can't read photos of homework in the current version.

Is ChatGPT study mode or Gemini Guided Learning better for maths?

Neither company has published a head-to-head test, and we haven't run one. Both break problems into steps and ask guiding questions. Try the same problem in both and see which one leaves you able to solve a similar one the next day.

Are ChatGPT study mode and Gemini Guided Learning free?

Yes. OpenAI lists study mode on the Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans, and Google launched Guided Learning for everyone, including free accounts.

Can parents lock study mode on?

OpenAI says parents with a linked teen account can turn study mode on from parental controls, so it is on by default whenever the teen starts a new chat. Google's pages we checked don't describe an equivalent setting for Guided Learning.

Can under-13s use either?

ChatGPT requires users to be at least 13. Gemini allows under-13s only through a parent-managed Family Link account, which Google says isn't available in the EEA, Switzerland or the UK.
